Braskem, for example, opened its first factory exclusively dedicated to the production of green plastic in Rio Grande do Sul. This type of ecological plastic offers a positive environmental balance, since for each ton produced, 2.5 tons of carbon dioxide are sequestered from the atmosphere.

Since 2000, the company has been producing the Ecoflex polymer, available in Brazil since 2007, which is biodegradable and can be composted. This material is used in a variety of applications, from car seat coverings to supermarket bags, demonstrating the versatility and effectiveness of ecological plastic.

The Importance of Gradual Replacement for a Sustainable Future

Despite the advantages of green plastics, the complete replacement of conventional plastics still faces significant challenges. The higher cost of green plastics, which can be up to 20% higher than fossil-based plastics, prevents its widespread adoption. However, as production increases, prices are expected to decrease, allowing green plastics to account for up to 20% of the total plastics produced worldwide by 2030.

As the adoption of eco-friendly plastics grows, a viable alternative is to reduce the use of conventional plastics whenever possible. In recent years, billions of plastic bags have been replaced by eco-bags and cardboard boxes, helping to reduce the environmental impact.

Success Stories in the Use of Ecological Plastic

Several national companies have already adopted ecological plastic in their operations. Natura, for example, uses green plastic in its creamy soap refills, while Johnson & Johnson has incorporated the material into its Sundown product line. Even the toy industry, such as Estrela, uses ecological plastic in games such as Monopoly.

In addition to these companies, Cargill has also invested in the development of biopolymers from polylactic acid, which is similar to PET and can replace it in several applications. This material, in addition to being recyclable, is biodegradable under composting conditions, which makes it a sustainable alternative to conventional plastic.

While eco-friendly plastics offer numerous advantages for recycling and the environment, their widespread implementation still faces obstacles. The main barrier is their higher cost compared to traditional plastics.
