Paper recycling is not only an environmentally responsible activity, but also a business opportunity that helps reduce the consumption of natural resources and prevents waste from accumulating in landfills. In addition, it can generate a significant source of income. If you are thinking about starting a paper recycling business, it is essential to understand the fundamentals of the industry and how to optimize the recycling process to be successful.
The Reality of Paper Recycling
The first step in setting up a paper recycling company is to recognize the importance of each stage of the process. Most recycled paper comes from commercial and industrial activities. These paper scraps, which are waste generated in large quantities, are categorized and classified by specialized institutes such as the São Paulo Institute of Technological Research and the National Association of Pulp and Paper Manufacturers. Knowing these categories and their classifications is essential for the success of the business, since each type of paper has a different value and requires specific treatment.
Types of Shavings and Their Value
The value of paper scraps varies considerably. The most valuable scraps are the “premium white” ones, which are unprinted and uncoated. These have a higher commercial value. In contrast, mixed scraps, which are the result of mixing different types of paper, have a lower commercial value. Efficiently separating these scraps and understanding their value is one of the keys to successful recycling.
What Can Be Recycled?
While technically almost any material can be recycled, economic viability and lack of appropriate policies often limit the recycling of certain products. It is crucial to separate paper from materials that cannot be recycled, such as carbon paper, paper coated with waterproof substances, laminated cardboard, and other materials that make the recycling process difficult. This sorting is essential to ensure that the recycled paper is of high quality and that the recycling process is effective.
Paper Recycling Processes
Paper recycling involves several specific processes, depending on the type of paper:
- Corrugated Paper: Also known as cardboard, it is mainly used for packaging. The recycling process begins with the disintegration of the fibers in the “hydrapulper”, which transforms the paper into a homogeneous mixture. Then, the impurities are removed, and the best quality fibers are used to create the outer cover of the boxes, while the lower quality fibers are used for the corrugated core. This process is less complex compared to other types of paper, as it does not require bleaching or intensive cleaning.
- Office Paper: Includes paper such as letter paper, notepads, and magazines. This paper is sorted, baled, and sold to scrap dealers, who send it to paper mills. At the mill, the paper is disaggregated into cellulose pulp, cleaned of ink and impurities, and the pulp is then refined and bleached. The techniques used to recycle office paper are more sophisticated and involve several pieces of equipment to ensure the quality of the recycled paper.
Challenges and Opportunities in Paper Recycling
Paper recycling faces some challenges, such as the need for appropriate processes to handle different types of waste and ensuring that the quality of recycled paper is high. However, these challenges also represent opportunities for innovation and improvement in the industry. Investing in more efficient recycling technologies and developing methods to increase the value of scraps can help overcome these obstacles.

Dear Sir, Good Morning.
We are a group of students who need to put together a project (PPI – Interdisciplinary Professional Project) on the Paper Recycling Industry, our theme will cover the preparation and manufacture of those bags made from recycled cardboard.
We need to plan the entire factory and calculate the costs of raw materials, labor and, most importantly, price the machinery. We will have to evaluate the entire business budget for this recycling process, up until the production of the new recycled paper, which is the main input for cutting and assembling the bags.
We would greatly appreciate it if you could help us with this information.
If you have any questions, please contact our Course Coordinator – Profº Hamilton

Dear Cybele,
Were you able to complete the work? If you did, I would be interested in hearing about the work you presented.
Thanks
Dear Eduardo, good afternoon,
I am doing a TCC where I will open a paper recycling industry, for the resale of recycled paper, as I will need to do all the planning of the industry, labor costs, machinery, products used for this transformation to take place, where would be a more suitable place to open this industry, etc.
I would be very grateful if you could help me with this process.
Kind regards,

Hello! I'm working on a project where we'll create spaces made of cardboard, cardboard scenarios. Would you know where we could get cardboard donations that would otherwise end up in the trash?
Thanks!
Goodnight
We are a group of production engineering students and we are developing a project to manufacture acoustic insulation for buildings using recycled paper. The raw material would be shredded and treated cardboard. So we are looking for a company to partner with and be able to supply this material as the raw material for our product. Waiting
